The Hijabi Mentorship Program

The Hijabi Mentorship Program (THMP) is a young women-led registered Community-Based Organization founded in 2018. It champions development by addressing Gender Equality in Underserved communities by addressing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Gender Based Violence (GBV), Peace and Conflict Resolution, and Economic Empowerment for women and girls in Kwale County. The organization empowers women and girls by creating conducive environments and availing of information and resources to ensure that they become positive and active drivers of change in their own lives.

THMP is one of the fastest-growing community-based organizations committed to advancing gender and social justice in coastal Kenya. It accomplishes its mission through the synergy that occurs by bringing together community members, stakeholders, and partners; collectively having a multiplier impact on our work. For the last four years, THMP has convened women across sectors, cultures, disciplines, and generations. Our members and partners are at the forefront, inspiring new thinking and shaping the greater good for our women and girls

THMP’s work is in line with three of the themes of the Generation Equality Action Coalition: GBV, Economic justice, rights, and Bodily autonomy, and SRHR. It is mainly guided by SDG1 (no poverty), SDG3 (good health and well-being), SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG5 (gender equality), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 16 (Peace and Justice Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnership for goals). In line with our objectives, our different projects are addressing the gaps in achieving gender equality, sustainable livelihoods, and good health, by enabling women and girls to have equal access to information and resources.

Milestones and Key Achievements

Over the last four years, we have achieved the following;

1. Launched the First Gender Champions training Academy in Kwale through the support of CREAW Kenya. Kwale County is a mostly rural and marginalised area of Kenya. Far from the development of Nairobi or even Mombasa, the youth and women of Kwale, though intelligent and capable, have often received the shorter end of the stick when it comes to exposure to 21st century developments. This marginalisation has slowed down the pace of development of the county and consequently led to ignorance on matters such as the SDGs, Gender Equality and women empowerment. With most of the leadership training sessions happening being brought by non local NGOs, they have not been able to reach the rural areas of Kwale County. The Hijabi Mentorship Program thereby found it necessary to bring this knowledge to the local youth and women, through The Gender Champions Academy. We have adequately sourced youth from all subcounties, and we believe that this is the first of such an academy to be formed in Kwale county specifically focusing and equiping feminist leaders.

2. Conducted a research on Addressing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights and Gender-Based Violence in Underserved Communities in Kenya Case of Kwale County.  The reports of our research are used as a benchmark reference for other organisations addressing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the region. It also informs THMP’s programs and activities on SRHR and GBV. This was supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

3. In collaboration with Addis Clinic, an international community of healthcare providers tackling global health challenges we have provided Support and Care Services to:

  • 38 Medics empowered with new technology

  • 3185  patients impacted through mobile clinics and telemedicine collaborations

  • Supported 4 rescue centres : Tsimba and Evy’s Home, Hennys Girls Rescue Center,  Home, Kebene Young Mothers Rescue Center and Upendo Home.

4. Supported the review and advocacy of the first Kwale County Sexual and Gender Violence Bill  2018.

5. Supported the review and assessment of the Kenya National Action Plan (2020-2024) for the advancement of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and the Kwale County Action Plan (2022-2024) for the advancement of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

6. In Collaboration with The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA), together with other 20 organisations in the Coast of Kenya, we formed a movement from all the 6 counties from the Coast region: The Coast Women Rights Movement : Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu and Taita Taveta. A cross-section of groups working on issues of GBV prevention and response , human rights and economic empowerment. Together, we are tackling identified barriers to women leadership in the region that include GBV , gender stereotypes,limited understanding of the legal and policy framework, lack of resources and addressing non-accountability measures from the leaders among others.

7. Introduced the first Nikumbuke Soccer league in Matuga sub-county. A soccer for gender program for older women. This is supported by the US Embassy and Rutgers University. Currently working with 66 women cutting across the 3 villages of Vuga, Ziwani and Chinarini.

8. We have contributed to strengthened institutional mechanisms i.e. police & local administrators who women and girls trust so that they can report cases of GBV and SRHR violations safely, confidentially & with no fear of reprisal. With about 40 administrators having been trained through our Generation Equality Project supported by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

9. Awareness about SRHR and GBV has significantly increased in the region. With our community awareness programs reaching out to over 3000 community members within the period of 4 years.

10. School Programs with a reach of 600 school-going children.
